Reverse osmosis membranes can reduce fluoride, but actual performance depends on the membrane, system design, operating conditions and maintenance.

Look beyond the headline

If fluoride reduction is the reason you are considering RO, check for model-specific test data or certification that covers fluoride. A generic statement about “RO” is less useful than evidence for the exact appliance.

UK context

Water composition varies by supply area. Check your water supplier's current information if you want to understand what is present in your tap water before choosing a treatment method.

Technical detail: fluoride is an ion, not a particle

Because fluoride is dissolved in water, a normal particle filter cannot simply strain it out. RO can reduce fluoride because the membrane rejects a substantial proportion of dissolved ions, but the exact reduction depends on membrane chemistry and operating conditions.
